HOW MANY CARS ARE ON THE ROAD?How many cars are on the road today? There are about 700 million cars on the road in the world today. In 2004, the fuel burnt by the 200 million cars in the US alone put 314 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Extrapolated globally, this means that 700 million cars in the world put 1.1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That's equal to burning all of the coal in a coal train stretching 193,000 miles long or wrapped about 8 times around the earth at the equator. And that's just the pollution created by those 700 million cars in one year! Those 700 million cars also average a set of new tires about every 2 years, or 1.3 billion tires annually, and those 1.3 billion tires consume about half of the earth's rubber production, which of course burns even more fuel. All of these numbers are set to rise sharply as the world population grows and countries like China and India, with populations of 1.3 billion and 1 billion respectively, modernize.
